on Sunday over 20 Essex Running and Athletic Clubs competed in the Essex County AAA Cross Country Relay Championships at Hockley.
On a four kilometre course through open fields and woodland, teams of runners raced in tough, muddy conditions, not helped by the early frost and persistent rain.
Each team, consisting of either five men or four women, raced as individuals in relay, the final runner giving the team's position.
Billericay Striders running club entered one team of women and two teams of men finishing 14th out of 25 teams in the men's race and ninth out of 17 teams in the women's race.
Team captain John Halliday commented: "This is the first time I can remember the Striders entering this number of runners in this Essex County Cross Country event.
"Bearing in mind the high standard set by the other clubs, our teams did well."
